No snow? No problem

Tips for making the most of your snow-free snow day

So, it's a snow day. Do you want to build a snowman? Oh, wait, there's no snow. Now what?

Philadelphia schools closed Tuesday in anticipation of potentially historical snowfall, but the blizzard never came.

Normally, a snow day means a chance for kids to run around having snowball fights, building snowmen and making snow forts. But that can't happen without any of that cold, fluffy white stuff.

Just because there's no snow doesn't mean you can't still enjoy the day off. Here are some tips to make the most of your snow-free snow day.

1. Be thankful.

First of all, think about what the lack of snow really means. No shoveling. No digging your plowed-in car out of the spot. You can rest easy knowing that if you do have somewhere you need to go, getting there won't be too much of a hassle.

2. Create your own snow.

OK, so nothing beats the real thing. But, makeshift snow will have to do. Use some glitter and a mason jar to make your own snow globe. Or, there's always the classic paper snowflake. Feeling extra ambitious? Whip up a batch of fake "snow" using baking soda and shaving cream.

3. Go "sledding" through the house.

You don't need snow to enjoy the thrill of sledding. Transform your home into the perfect indoor sledding spot. Tie a rope to a sled, or even a laundry basket, and pull the kids from room to room. Create your own "slopes" using furniture.

4. Build a (paper plate) snowman.

Build a family of snowmen without even leaving the house. Paper plate snowmen are fun and easy to make. Make it a contest to see who can create the most interesting snowman of the bunch.

5. Go "ice skating."

Ice skating is another fun snow day activity that kids love. Why not bring the skating rink to you? Tie some plastic shopping bags to the kids' feet (or your own) and skate around from room to room. Triple axel anyone?
