Alabama scientist Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green – one of fewer than 100 black female physicists in the U.S. – has been awarded a $1.1 million grant to further develop a new patent-pending cancer treatment technology, The Alabama Media Group reports.
Green's research uses laser-activated nanoparticles to treat cancer without the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation, AL.com reports.
While she isn't the first to think of using lasers for treating cancer, her method has "work(ed) the bugs out of parts of the technology that have been problematic," AL.com said. She's also seen successful results in initial animal testings.
