For mothers contemplating continuing a career versus being a stay-at-home mom, here’s an argument to add to the pros list: Working moms raise more successful adult daughters and sweeter sons.
A recent draft report by the Harvard Business School analyzed national data and survey responses from women in 24 countries, including the U.S, and found daughters of employed mothers were 4.5 percent more likely to be employed themselves and have higher salaries.
The income of daughters of working mothers in the US was $5,200 higher than that of daughters of women who stayed at home, reported Kathleen McGinn, a professor at Harvard Business School and the lead author of the study.
The researchers also found a positive outcome for sons of working moms: As adults, they tend to spend more time caring for their family members than men whose mothers stayed home full time, the report found.
The report also indicates working moms also help to banish gender inequality in the workforce.
