Francis Ford Coppola's 1972 classic 'The Godfather' has captured audiences for decades since its release, a cinematic rite of passage that dramatizes the do-or-die wisdom of mob life, inspired by the eponymous novel.
As fantastic as 'The Godfather' screenplay is, it's hard to imagine the original movie without the Grammy-winning score by composer Nino Rota.
To revive that intensity and range of emotion, California conductor Justin Freer has been touring cities around the world to lead symphony and orchestra performances accompanying screenings of the film. According to
Variety, which reviewed a Los Angeles performance in January with the Hollywood Studio symphony, Freer dug into Paramount's music archives to restore the iconic Rota score.
From the show's official site:
“That we are able to preserve and present some of the most cherished music in the history of our craft is both exhilarating and humbling,” said Freer. “There is little film music as instantly recognizable as Nino Rota’s opening music played on trumpet, and only a handful of films as masterfully made as The Godfather. The marriage of these two masterpieces on stage live will be something to remember.”
