Suspect critically injured after being shot by police in North Philly

A man was critically injured Friday night after he was shot by a police officer in North Philadelphia, CBSPhilly reports.

The shooting occurred around 7 p.m. at 8th Street and Fairmount Avenue, police said. 

According to initial reports, an officer in full uniform riding in a marked vehicle was responding to a report of a person with a gun at 8th and Green Streets.

The suspect reportedly had a handgun in his waistband when the officer spotted him. He apparently ignored orders to show his hands and began to pull the gun from his waist. The officer responded by shooting the suspect in the chest.

Police recovered a loaded, semi-automatic handgun from the suspect. He was taken to Hahnemann Hospital in critical condition.

The incident is under investigation.
