Three trades that make sense for the Eagles

Rams TE Davis Allen

Howie Roseman made five trades last August to try to help bolster the back of the roster heading into Week 1 of the regular season. He's likely already calling around trying to get a sense of who might be available, and what expendable players on his own roster are garnering interest from other teams around the league.

We all like "throwing darts" types of speculative trades that aren't likely to happen right? Yes? No? Well, whatever, thanks for your clicks. 😏

Eagles OT Fred Johnson to the Rams for TE Davis Allen

The Eagles' TE1 is Dallas Goedert. Their TE2 is Johnny Mundt, who is more of a blocking specialist than a receiver. Their TE3? I dunno. They could probably use one, particularly with some receiving chops, since second-round rookie Eli Stowers does not yet look like a playable option.

The Rams have five tight ends projected to make their roster this year. I'm not a Rams insider, but I'd probably rank their current hierarchy like so:

  1. Colby Parkinson: TE1, not going anywhere.
  2. Tyler Higbee: Longtime team leader, not going anywhere.
  3. Terrance Ferguson: 23-year-old 2025 second-round draft pick, not going anywhere.
  4. Davis Allen: Good backup TE, final year of rookie contract.
  5. Max Klare: 2026 second-round pick, not going anywhere.

Allen is pretty clearly the most tradeable player of the five. He is 6'6, 253, and in 2025 he had 24 receptions for 208 yards and 3 TDs. He is a big red zone target and a decent blocker. As noted above, he is heading into the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, and feels unlikely to sign back with the Rams in 2027 since they're so loaded at tight end.

One of the rare concern areas on the Rams' roster is at offensive tackle, and Johnson had a standout game against them in 2025. If the Eagles think third-round rookie Markel Bell is capable of handling swing tackle duties as a rookie, then Johnson could be expendable.

Eagles QB Andy Dalton to the Patriots for WR Mack Hollins

Dalton had a decent couple of days in joint practices in Foxboro (though a poor game performance), and he would make some sense for the Patriots, seeing as their current QB2 is somehow Tommy DeVito. The Pats will have tape of Dalton from those practices, and he might be a valuable off-the-field sounding board for the young and talented Drake Maye.

The Patriots are deep at receiver after trading for A.J. Brown and spending big money on WR2 Romeo Doubs. They also have a nice little slot receiver in Demario Douglas, a 2025 third-round pick in Kyle Williams, and a couple of backups with past modest production in Kayshon Boutte and Mack Hollins.

Boutte has been the subject of trade speculation for the entire offseason, but I think the player who makes more sense for the Eagles is Hollins, who the Eagles selected in the fourth round of the 2017 draft.

The Eagles cut Hollins during his third year with the team, and he was picked up by the Dolphins where he played out the rest of the 2019 season, plus two more seasons. He then played one year each with the Raiders, Falcons, Bills, and Patriots.

Hollins' Eagles tenure was a disappointment, but he has turned into a quality backup "dirty work" receiver / core special teams player. In 2025 in New England, Hollins had 46 catches for 550 yards and 2 TDs, averaging a career-high 8.5 yards per target.

The biggest receiver on the Eagles' roster (at least among the guys who at least have a chance of making the roster) is Dontayvion Wicks, at 6'1, 206.

 Eagles WRHeight Weight
 Dontayvion Wicks6'1 206
DeVonta Smith 6'0 170
Makai Lemon 5'11 192
Darius Cooper 5'11 210
Elijah Moore 5'10 178
Hollywood Brown 5'9 170
Britain Covey 5'8 173

That is a very small group of receivers.

The Eagles waived 6'6 WR Johnny Wilson with an injury designation on Friday. Mack Hollins (6'4, 221) is essentially who they were hoping Wilson could be. So maybe just go get Hollins? He should be cheap, as he doesn't have a clear role with the Patriots, and he turns 33 in September.

Eagles CB Kelee Ringo to the Buccaneers for a seventh-round pick

The Bucs' depth at outside corner is pretty gross, and they play in a division with a lot of notable big receivers. Ringo has size and speed, and has made some plays in the preseason games.
