Renovations at the 69th Street Transportation Center in Upper Darby are underway.

SEPTA held a groundbreaking ceremony Monday to formally commence the $19.6 million improvement project at the 105-year-old transportation hub, which serves passengers on the Market-Frankford Line, Norristown High Speed Line, trolleys and buses. Nearly 35,000 people use the station each day.

The project calls for the reconstruction of pedestrian ramps to terminal platforms, canopies and the center platform waiting area. The south platform will be partially reconstructed, and security cameras will be installed. Green roofs and energy-efficient LED lighting also will be implemented.

The improvements are part of SEPTA's "Rebuilding for the Future" capital program. Funding comes from Pennsylvania Act 89 and the Federal Transit Administration Bus and Bus Facility Livability Grant Program.

The west terminal will be closed from June 15 through completion in November. Shuttle buses will be used for Trolley Routes 101 and 102. The boarding locations for those shuttles, as well as Routes 104, 107, 109, 110, 111, 112, 120, 123 and 126, will be relocated to a temporary loop.
