Critics Choice Awards 2019: Lady Gaga, Glenn Close tie for best actress; 'The Favourite' missed the ceremony

The Critics Choice Awards aired on the CW last night. "Roma" topped off the evening by winning four awards including best picture, foreign-language film, director and cinematography. Though the real takeaway of the evening were the unusual moments - the ties and the no-shows.

Glenn Close tied with Lady Gaga for best actress in a movie while Amy Adams tied with Patricia Arquette for best actress in a limited series or TV movie. Adams and Arquette shared the stage, giving one another time to deliver their speeches. Close and Gaga took turns on the stage, with Close delivering her speech first before Gaga was called onto the stage.

But the oddest thing of the evening wasn't even the ties. "The Favourite," which was the most nominated film of the evening, won for best acting ensemble - but no one in the cast or crew was there to accept the award. Olivia Colman also won for best actress in a comedy, though Colman and her costars were absent.

There were some notable wins of the evening. "A Quiet Place" won for best sci-fi or horror movie. "Crazy Rich Asians" won best comedy. Elsie Fisher won best young actor/actress for "Eighth Grade." Original screenplay went to Paul Schrader ("Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull") for “First Reformed” - which was notably absent from the Golden Globes nominations. "Black Panther" took home best production design, best visual effects, and best costume design.

A week after accepting his Golden Globe, Christian Bale won again for best actor for “Vice” - and again as best actor in a comedy. Mahershala Ali won again for best supporting actor for the “Green Book” as did Regina King for “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

“Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” took home best animated film again. “Shallow” from “A Star is Born” won a second time for best song. “The Americans” also took home best drama series again as did Sandra Oh for best actress in a drama series for “Killing Eve.” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won for best comedy series as did Rachel Brosnahan for best actress.

Some other repeats include Darren Criss for “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story,” Ben Whishaw for “A Very English Scandal."

The Critics Choice Awards are historically predictive of the Academy Awards nominations, which are set to come out on Jan. 22. See below for the full list of winners and nominees.
