Day 9 of Philadelphia Eagles training camp is in the books, and there were some fun situational periods today. As always, we have a lot of practice notes, so let's just get right to them.
• Darius Cooper had to have been close to double-digit receptions during 11-on-11's today. But what has been impressive about his camp so far is that he's doing it in a variety of ways.
1) He had a contested catch with Michael Carter in coverage.
2) He's consistently getting open in the middle of the field and making catches on the run.
3) He ran an out route today and got all kinds of separation against Riq Woolen, and then shortly thereafter hit Woolen with a double move and dusted him down the sideline. Jalen Hurts was able to connect with Cooper on that play, and even though he underthrew it Cooper was so far behind the defense that he was able to wait for the ball to get to him.
He has simply had a tremendous camp, and I thought today was his best day yet.
• There was a fun situational session in 11-on-11's near the end of the day. In was an end of game situation, offense on their own 35, 55 seconds, a couple timeouts, down by 4.
On the first play of the starting offense vs. the starting defense, Quinyon Mitchell made a diving INT to seal the game. He then punted the football.
• Later in another end game situation, the offense lined up on the defense's 35, 52 seconds, no timeouts, again down 4. Here's how that went:
1) Hurts to Cooper for 7.
2) Great pass breakup by Mitchell on a sideline throw to Cooper.
3) Hurts to Elijah Moore for 3.
4) Hurts to Cooper near the sideline, but it was a low throw that required Cooper to go to the ground to catch it, and he couldn't get out of bounds. Tick tick tick.
5) Spike.
So then the offense had 2 seconds to run one last play from the 14 yard line. Vic Fangio only rushed three, and Hurts had alllll day. He eventually rolled right, threw across his body, and found Moore for a TD.
After the play, a whiny Nolan Smith complained loudly that Hurts would have never had as much time to throw as he did. He then suggested to anyone within earshot that they ingest one of his body parts, lol.
In my view, it was a legit play. Nobody came close to Hurts, so he extended the play, patiently waited for something to come open, and then made a good throw for the win.
That was a really fun series to watch up close.
• There was a good fight today. Tyler Steen blocked Ty Robinson through the whistle, Robinson didn't like it, and (boxing match bell) it was on. Steen tossed Robinson to the ground and then jumped on top of him, while bodies accumulated over the pile. It took a while to peel everyone off. Steen definitely got the best of that fight. If you'll recall, Steen tried to fight the entire Commanders defense last season:
He can get a little frisky.
• Ty Robinson may have lost the fight, but he had a good day otherwise. On a two-play sequence he hit Jake Majors with his patented club move, getting free for a sack. Then he hit Majors with a bull rush that resulted in a pressure.
Robinson had a slow start to camp — and it's not as if Majors is Larry Allen — but he has come on of late.
• Andy Dalton had a tough day.
1) He threw off-target to Moore, and his pass was nearly picked by Woolen. (I thought Woolen should have had it.)
2) Dalton had Cooper open over the middle and threw behind him.
3) He missed Britain Covey for what should have been a pretty easy throw over the middle.
4) He had another miss to Cooper late in practice.
5) In the situational 2's vs. 2's, Dalton had a chance on 4th and 10 to hit Quez Watkins with a deep ball for the win, and he overthrew him.
That was his worst day of camp, by far.
I thought Tanner McKee made some nice throws. His best throw was on a play he got to step into a throw to Brandon Hayes.
Cole Payton didn't get many reps, but his most notable throw was way over Hayes' head down the field.
• Tank Bigsby is fun to watch. On a play in which Moore got open over the middle with room to run after the catch, Bigsby was hustling down the field, looking for someone to block. He found Woolen, which allowed Moore to pick up another 10-15 yards.
• Undrafted rookie long snapper Rocco Underwood had a really high snap to Braden Mann during a punting session. It was a good foot or so over Mann's head. Mann was able to gather it in and get the punt off. Underwood also had a few snaps that were off to the right a bit. This morning we identified long snapper as one of the Eagles' three biggest positional concerns.
