Testing Time Mag's name generator on Philly folks

Entertainment Names

Chip Kelly smiles as he listens to a question as NFC coaches meet with the media during the NFL's annual meeting Wednesday in Phoenix.

Time.com released a name generator on Wednesday that shows readers what they'd be called today if they had a name with the same popularity as the year they arrived in the world.

The addictive tool is based on newly released baby name data for 2014 from the Social Security Administration. Plug in your name, year of birth and gender, and the online gizmo reveals your "Today Name," along with your name for the past 12 decades.

PhillyVoice decided it would be fun to test the generator on some well-known Philadelphia-area personalities. It was most certainly addicting.

CHIP KELLY

Born in 1963, Kelly's "Today Name" would be Johan. But perhaps more entertaining is that his 1980s name would have been Deshaun. So the spelling is a little different, but remember that time Kelly cut DeSean Jackson from the Eagles?

WILL SMITH

Good old Will Smith, born in West Philadelphia, had the sixth most popular name when he was born in 1968. Today his name would be Ethan, according to the generator. Does Ethan sound like a "Fresh Prince?"

SHEENA PARVEEN

NBC10 meteorologist Sheena Parveen already has a pretty unique name. Time's interactive tool says Parveen's name would be Gabriela today. Some names from other decades would be Ima (1930s), Vesta (1920s) and Alva (1910s).

MICHAEL NUTTER

Mayor Michael Nutter, born in 1957, had the most popular boy's name of that year. Today, he would be called Noah. Because of the popularity of his name the year he was born, Nutter has some generic names for the other decades, including John, David and James.

KELLY RIPA

South Jersey native Kelly Ripa, who recently received the Excellence in Media award by GLAAD, an LGBT media activist organization, would be named Aubrey today. In the early 1900s, the talk show host could have been called Ethel, Doris or Edith.

The names could go on forever. You can give Time's name gizmo a try here.
