New Jersey Transit temporarily removes 11 train workers under new sleep disorder rules

Eleven New Jersey Transit workers have been temporarily removed from their jobs in accordance with the agency's new sleep disorder regulations, according to an Associated Press report.

Under the new regulations, New Jersey Transit train engineers and conductors will be put on leave until they can “document they’ve controlled or corrected” their conditions.

These new rules were put in place in October, shortly after a deadly Sept. 29 train crash in Hoboken. Preliminary findings showed the engineer had sleep apnea, a fatigue-inducing disorder, though investigators have yet to release a final report on probable cause.

Before the new rules were implemented, New Jersey Transit train operators with sleep disorders were able to continue working if they had proof that they were undergoing treatment for their conditions.
