Trea Turner, Alec Bohm go on Injured List, expected to be back for Phillies' postseason run

Turner has a Grade 1 hamstring strain, and Bohm a left shoulder issue that the Phillies wanted to address now. The infielders should be back in time for October.

Trea Turner was arguably the best hitting shortstop in the National League before he left Sunday's game in Miami with a hamstring injury.

Phillies shortstop Trea Turner is going on the Injured List. So is third baseman Alec Bohm. Both are expected to be back in time for the postseason, though.

Turner has a Grade 1 right hamstring strain, manager Rob Thomson told the local media on Monday (via KYW's Dave Uram) after the shortstop underwent an MRI earlier upon the club's return home to Philadelphia.

"Actually, it was better than what we expected," Thomson said of Turner's hopeful status for a playoff return (again via Uram).

As for Bohm, Thomson said the third baseman has been dealing with pain in his left shoulder for the past week to 10 days, and that it worsened enough in Sunday's 5-4 loss in Miami to the point where the club is opting to give him a rest.

"He could feel it every once in a while on a swing," Thomson said of Bohm's shoulder issue (once again via Uram). "Yesterday, he felt it on every swing, so decided to shut this thing down. We expect him to be back in 10 days."

Infielders Otto Kemp and Donovan Walton were called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill the spots on the active roster, per multiple beats, including Phillies Nation's Destiny Lugardo.

The postseason begins Sept.30 with the Wild Card rounds. The NLDS, which the Phillies will gain a bye into so long as they hold their lead as one of the top two division leaders, begins Oct. 4.

Turner quickly exited Sunday's loss to the Marlins down in Miami in the seventh inning, when he outran a ground ball that was misfired on the throw to first base.

Turner ran through the base to reach safely, but then immediately called for time to the first base umpire and walked back to the dugout, where a team trainer ran out to meet him.

The Phillies announced soon after that Turner had a right hamstring strain.

Postgame, the shortstop said he felt his hamstring "grabbing on me."

"Just felt like if I could've kept going, I would've," Turner continued (via NBC Sports Philadelphia). "If not, get out of there and try to limit the damage."

Turner was slashing .305/.356/.458 in 140 games on the season before leaving on Sunday. In the 46 games since the All-Star break, his bat has been even hotter, with a line of .337/.383/.508.

He took over the leadoff spot in the Phillies' batting order and bought into an altered approach at the plate that prioritized him getting on base early and often, which manager Rob Thomson praised him for successfully committing to and executing.

But now the Phillies are suddenly without that crucial bat at the top for the rest of the stretch, and with a pivotal four-game series against the rival New York Mets imminently on deck beginning Monday night at Citizens Bank Park.

Utilityman Edmundo Sosa will get the start at short in place of Turner for Monday night, and star first baseman Bryce Harper will take up the leadoff spot, per the Phillies' posted lineup. Sosa will bat eighth, and Kemp will enter the lineup batting ninth as the third baseman for Bohm.

Sosa, a capable veteran himself, will presumably handle the majority of the work at shortstop for the time being.

Turner also had a left hamstring issue in early 2024, which caused him to miss about six weeks from early May into mid June. Inadvertently, that set a fearful precedent for fans as soon as they saw Turner leave Sunday's game, and at an even worse time in the year for it.

Luckily for the Phillies' postseason hopes, they're not expected to be without Turner for long.
