Police charge man in fatal shooting of brother in Northeast Philadelphia

Authorities say suspect shot brother after argument involving mother

Philadelphia police have arrested and charged a man who allegedly shot and killed his older brother Thursday night in Northeast Philadelphia.

According to authorities, 33-year-old William Shields fatally shot his brother, 50-year-old James Stevens, around 10:30 p.m. Thursday night at a home on the 3100 block of Woodhaven Road, 6 ABC reports. The confrontation allegedly escalated after Stevens yelled at their mother, who was home at the time and placed the call to police.

Officers who responded to the scene found Stevens suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was rushed to Aria-Torresdale Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 1:34 a.m. Friday.

Police continue to investigate the incident and say Shields killed Stevens with a shotgun. He remained at the scene and was taken into custody without further complication.

Shields has been charged with murder and possessing an instrument of crime.
