For depression sufferers, researchers may have discovered shortcut for finding right medication

A premedication blood test could pinpoint which antidepressant medication may work best for an individual

Finding the right plan for treating depression may soon become easier as researchers have discovered a simple blood test may hold the answers to which antidepressant would work best on an individual level.

The findings, led by researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, would hypothetically cut out the trial-and-error phase often experienced by depression patients when trying to find the right antidepressant.

One of the main issues with treating depression is that there are many different antidepressants available, and each works differently, while at the same time, each person is different.

This means that finding the right antidepressant oftentimes revolves around self-identifying questionnaires and trials, with patients acting on their own behalf by reporting back to doctors whether they feel the medication is working or if they are experiencing any negative side effects.
