Demolition on the Granite Run Mall is expected to begin by the end of the year.

A longtime Delaware County fixture is inching closer to its demise.

The demolition of the Granite Run Mall, which opened its doors in 1974 at 1067 W. Baltimore Pike in Middletown Township, could begin by the end of the year, according to the Delaware County Daily Times. About 30 stores in the 125-outlet shopping mall remain open. Once their leases expire, demolition will begin.

BET Investments, a Horsham-based developer with Bruce E. Toll as a principal, purchased the property in 2013 with the intent of transforming the struggling mall into an upscale town center. Two anchor stores — Sears and Boscov's — are expected to remain.

The Mickey Vernon Sports History Museum, which features Delco sports memorabilia, became the latest business to shut its doors on Saturday.
