Narcotics officers acquitted on charges sue top city officials

DA, police commissioner and mayor are targets

The five narcotics officers that were tried and acquitted on charges they behaved like the criminals they were supposed to be fighting are now suing some of the city's top leaders for defamation.

The complaint is detailed at the legal news site Big Trial. The officers, along with their supervisor who joined the suit, want damages from the District Attorney Seth Williams, Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey and Mayor Michael Nutter. All three officials did not immediately comment for Big Trial's article.

The complaint comes from the officers who faced a federal indictment on allegations they stole money, beat up those they suspected of dealing drugs and violated due process practices. Since their acquittal, they have been given their jobs back.

The five cops, Perry Betts, Thomas Liciardello, Brian Reynolds, John Speiser and Michael Spicer, were joined in their complaint by their supervisor, Lt. Robert G. Otto, the website said.
