A contractor's rail car has derailed in South Jersey, causing morning commute havoc on PATCO. Stations and trains are jammed as the rail service struggles with a temporary morning schedule of about every 20 minutes for service.

The train ride between Center City and South Jersey is about to get much more comfortable and convenient  thanks to a more than $4.6 million renovation project beginning next week.

The project will be completed in two phases, starting at the Lindenwold station and proceeding west on the rail line toward Philadelphia, CBS Philly reports.

Upgrades will include installing flat-screen monitors at all 13 train stations in New Jersey and Philadelphia to provide commuters with up-to-date scheduling information, including timely train arrival and delay information, as well as extensive repairs to security cameras, escalators and elevators, and the addition of wi-fi.

Simplex Grinnell Co., a security and communications firm headquartered in Westminster, Mass., has been contracted to complete the renovations.
