Stenton Museum event will honor formerly enslaved Black woman who secured her freedom in 1776.

A North Philadelphia historic site will host an event later this month honoring the life of Dinah, a formerly enslaved Black woman who secured her freedom in 1776.

Stenton Museum will hold its third annual Dinah Day on Saturday, April 18, from noon to 4 p.m. at its grounds in the Logan neighborhood, as part of broader celebrations tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The event marks the anniversary of Dinah’s manumission, which took place months before the signing of the Declaration of Independence. During her lifetime, she also helped save Stenton from being burned by British soldiers during the American Revolution and later remained at the site as a paid worker until her death in 1805.

Dinah Day will include tours, performances and a screening tied to her story.

Programming is scheduled to begin with opening remarks at the Dinah Memorial, followed by house tours, storytelling performances and hands-on activities for visitors. A screening of Dinah’s episode from the docuseries “For the Common Good: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation” is also planned.

The Dinah Memorial, unveiled in 2024, is the first in Philadelphia dedicated to a formerly enslaved Black woman.
