Tribute concerts bring The King, Grateful Dead, Sublime to life

Cover bands make old songs new again at local events

Good music stays with us long after our favorite bands and musicians pass into history. The Philly area, for some reason, is flush with tribute concerts of all kinds. Head to these upcoming shows to relive the glory days of legendary recording artists. When you get there, close your eyes, feel the music, and pretend you're watching the real thing.

Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime

Badfish has created a significant niche for themselves among concert goers with their resuscitation of Sublime's '90s ska sound. When Brad Nowell, the artistic force behind Sublime, died in 1996 just before the release of what would become a hit album, the rapidly growing fan base mourned. Badfish takes those fans under their wing while they tour the nation playing Sublime's "40 oz. to Freedom" in its entirety.

The Philly Local Joni Mitchell Tribute

Artists from all over the region are coming together for one night to celebrate Joni Mitchell. Musician Brad Hinton, Chelsea Mitchell of Dirty Dollhouse, Allison Polans, Imani Roach and Ryan Williams of soul group The York Street Hustle, singer-songwriter Shannon Pelcher and more will participate in this tribute concert. Meanwhile, Joni Mitchell has embarked on a new career: modeling for Saint Laurent

KICK - The INXS Experience

To celebrate what would have been INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence's 55th birthday, KICK will perform the Australian rockers' best tunes. This will be a bit of a homecoming for founder Cory Massi; it's his first performance in the area in a decade, though he was first inspired by INXS after seeing them live in Philly in the '80s.

Tom Petty & R.E.M. Tribute Show

The Big Jangle is a Philly-based six-piece rocking Tom Petty tunes. Lower Wolves, playing their debut show, is a Philly quartet covering R.E.M.'s early days. This combination show is sure to create a weird blend of genres, icons, and time periods if you're willing take the ride.

Box of Rain

This is kind of a Grateful Dead tribute band supergroup, if you will, as Box of Rain includes former members of both Splintered Sunlight and Dark Star Orchestra. This six-piece specifically focuses on Grateful Dead's work between 1968 and 1974, during which time they released 10 albums.

Bruce in the USA

Since the real Boss's future touring plans are MIA, fans of Bruce and his E Street Band should head to Wilmington for this performance. The leader of the group, Matt Ryan, is well-versed in Springsteenia, having played The Boss in a Vegas show for eight years.
