Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Maryland is planning a series of penis transplants - a first for the United States - in an effort to restore sexual function and enable reproduction for military veterans wounded in war.
According to 6ABC, the procedures are expected to treat approximately 1,300 wounded veterans, most of whom are under the age of 35 and were wounded by roadside bombs in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The Hopkins medical team hopes to perform the first procedure within the next year, possibly even sooner, 6ABC reports.
