The Philadelphia Phillies selected outfielder Tyler Goeddel from the Tampa Bay Rays organization with the first overall pick in the major league portion of the Rule 5 Draft, Director of Professional Scouting Mike Ondo announced Thursday. The Phillies also selected left-hander Daniel Stumpf of the Kansas City Royals organization in the second round.
Goeddel, 23, batted .279 with 17 doubles, 10 triples, 12 home runs, 72 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 123 games last season for double-A Montgomery. He was selected as a 2015 Southern League midseason All-Star, and finished third in the league in RBI and fifth in triples and stolen bases.
Goeddel, who was moved from third base to the outfield last season, committed just two errors while splitting time at all three outfield positions for the Biscuits. Prior to the 2015 season, Goeddel was ranked as the 19th-best prospect in the Rays organization by Baseball America. Over his four-year minor league career, Goeddel is batting .262 with 142 extra-base hits (79 2B, 32 3B, 31 HR) and 108 stolen bases in 451 games.
He was originally selected by the Rays between the 1st and 2nd rounds (41st overall) of the June 2011 draft and is the brother of current New York Mets pitcher Erik Goeddel.
The 24-year-old Stumpf went 5-4 with a 3.57 ERA in 42 games last season for double-A Northwest Arkansas. The southpaw struck out 76 batters in 70.2 innings while holding opponents to a .212 average, including a .167 mark against left-handed hitters. He finished third in the Texas League in 2015 in both strikeouts per 9.0 innings (9.68) and opponents average. Over his four-year minor league career, Stumpf is 20-23 in 118 games (34 starts) with a 3.21 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 306 strikeouts in 311.1 innings pitched.
He was originally selected by the Royals in the 9th round of the June 2012 draft out of San Jacinto Community College in Houston, TX.
The Phillies lost one player in the minor league portion of the draft, right-hander Manny Martinez, who went 3-1 with a 2.51 ERA for single-A Lakewood last season. Martinez was selected by the Chicago White Sox.
