Philly man charged in traffic death of 80-year-old woman

Suspect blew through red light and crashed into victim's car, prosecutors say

A Philadelphia man faces a homicide charge in the traffic death of an elderly woman in Hatfield, authorities announced Friday.

The Montgomery County District Attorney's Office says Jacquill Maurice Johnson was driving at a high rate of speed northbound on Welsh Road around 4:52 a.m. Friday.

Shirley Russell, 80, was driving west on Forty Foot Road and entered the intersection of Welsh Road with a green light, prosecutors say.

Johnson allegedly blew threw a red light and crashed into Russell's vehicle, causing it to flip over on its side.

Authorities say Johnson took the registration plate out of his back window after the crash and fled the scene.

Russell suffered severe blunt impact injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, prosecutors say.

Johnson returned to the scene of the incident an hour after it occurred and was arrested, according to authorities.

On top of a homicide by vehicle charge, Johnson was allegedly driving with a suspended license and had no proper tags or insurance for his car.

A preliminary hearing is pending.
