Rare comet could be visible in Philly skies until late October

A rare comet will be visible on the western horizon in the Philadelphia region between Oct. 14-24, according to NASA. The comet, called Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, only passes by Earth once every 80,000 years. Although possibly visible to the naked eye, it's recommended to use either binoculars or a small telescope for the best view.

Gillian's Wonderland Pier closes leaving questions about what's next for Ocean City's boardwalk

Gillian's Wonderland Pier, the amusement park that has operated for nearly a century on the Ocean City boardwalk, will close for good on Sunday. The pending shutdown of the Jersey Shore fixture has fueled months of speculation about whether a hotel could be built there and if local leaders would consider approving a liquor license in the dry town.

Police release video showing 3 men wanted for burglary of SS United States

Three men broke into the SS United States from Pier 82 in South Philly earlier this month and stole about $1,700 worth of property from the historic ocean liner. The men were caught on video using a rope and pulley to access the ship, which will leave the city later this month to be sunken and turned into an artificial reef for scuba diving and fishing on the Florida panhandle in Okaloosa County.

Philadelphia jury awards $78 million to man who said his cancer was caused by Roundup weed killer

A Philadelphia jury awarded $78 million in state court to an Abington Township man who alleged an ingredient in Roundup weed killer caused him to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a type of blood cancer. The case is one of many against manufacturer Monsanto and its parent company, Bayer AG, claiming exposure to the ingredient glyphosate causes cancer.

Conshohocken Italian Bakery to close after 51-year run

Conshohocken Italian Bakery, at 79 Jones St., will close later in October after 51 years in business, the owners said in an Instagram post. The business is widely known for its hoagie rolls — used by many cheesesteak shops in the Philadelphia region — and its kaiser rolls, bagels, tomato pies and Easter bread.

Bicycle safety upgrades on Spruce and Pine streets to be discussed at public meeting next week

Potential safety upgrades to the bike lanes on Spruce and Pine streets in Center City will be discussed at a public meeting Thursday, Oct. 17. There are plans to install concrete barriers as a buffer to protect cyclists. Advocates put pressure on the city to improve safety after bicyclist Barbara Friedes was fatally struck by an alleged drunk driver in July.

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small and his wife, La'Quetta, plead not guilty to beating their daughter

Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr. and his wife, La'Quetta Small, pleaded not guilty to charges that they physically harmed their teenage daughter. They entered their pleas during their arraignment hearing in Mays Landing on Thursday. The couple allegedly beat their 16-year-old daughter on multiple occasions last winter.

Explosives found after fire at Northeast Philly rowhome could have wiped out the block if ignited, police say

Evgenii Sadrislamov, 27, is charged with possessing weapons of mass destruction and multiple other offenses after authorities found about 50 pounds of explosives inside his rowhome in Mayfair last week. Police went to the home after a fire was reported there on Oct. 4.

Conjoined twin boys, born last year with a shared liver, successfully separated by CHOP surgeons

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia surgeons separated conjoined twin boys who were connected at the liver, sternum and abdominal walls. The boys, Amari and Javar Ruffin, spent more than a year at the hospital before they went home to their family in West Philadelphia. Their surgery occurred in August.

RoxYunk Porchfest returns Saturday with 100 musical performances at dozens of properties

RoxYunk Porchfest will feature about 100 musical performances to dozens of properties in Roxborough and Manayunk on Saturday, marking the free festival's third year. Saturday's festival runs from about noon to 6 p.m., with an 11 a.m. kickoff event at Fairview Park. An interactive map shows when and where artists are scheduled to perform.
