Conjoined twin boys, born last year with a shared liver, successfully separated by CHOP surgeons

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia surgeons separated conjoined twin boys who were connected at the liver, sternum and abdominal walls. The boys, Amari and Javar Ruffin, spent more than a year at the hospital before they went home to their family in West Philadelphia. Their surgery occurred in August.

Temporary flood barriers to be built in Southwest Philly's low-lying Eastwick neighborhood

Southwest Philadelphia's flood-prone Eastwick neighborhood will get temporary HESCO barriers built to protect the low-lying community from water damage during heavy rain. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is still studying the feasibility of building a 15-foot-tall levee along the banks of Cobbs Creek.

EPA reaches record $4.2 million settlement with PES in 2019 refinery explosion

A record-setting $4.2 million settlement was reached between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Philadelphia Energy Solutions to resolve Clean Air Act violations connected to the 2019 explosion and fire at the former refinery in South Philly, federal officials said Tuesday. The penalty is EPA's largest for a single incident for Clean Air Act violations.

'Philly Homicide,' a new true crime series, delves into 10 high-profile murders in the region

Oxygen will debut a new series, "Philly Homicide," that looks at 10 high-profile murder cases from the Philadelphia region in recent decades. The series features interviews with detectives and the family members of homicide victims. It's narrated by Lt. Chris McMullin of the Bucks County Sheriff's Office. The show premieres Oct. 26 at 9 p.m.

Panera Bread settles lawsuit with family of Penn student who died after drinking Charged Lemonade

Panera Bread settled a lawsuit filed by the family of University of Pennsylvania student Sarah Katz, who suffered a fatal heart attack after she drank the chain's Charged Lemonade drink two years ago. The discontinued, caffeinated drink has led to four lawsuits against Panera, which has been accused of failing to properly label and disclose the contents of Charged Lemonade.

Curtis Bashaw, U.S. Senate candidate in N.J., says he froze during debate because he didn't eat enough

Curtis Bashaw, the Republican candidate for U.S. Senate in New Jersey, appeared to nearly pass out during his debate Sunday night with Democratic opponent Andy Kim. Bashaw, a businessman from Cape May, stalled during a response and looked disoriented at the podium. Kim crossed the stage to check on him. Bashaw later said the incident happened because didn't eat enough on Sunday before the debate.

Missed the Savannah Bananas last month? They'll be back in Philly, but you need to enter a lottery to get tickets.

The Savannah Bananas, the fun-filled exhibition baseball team, will make two more appearances at Citizens Bank Park in 2025 on July 26-27. The team sold out the ballpark in September, notching its biggest event to date. The league will expand to four teams in 2025 and visit 40 U.S. cities. Tickets are available through a lottery sign-up system.

The business opened during the COVID-19 pandemic and was inspired by owner Eric Lucero's exposure to diverse Latin cuisines growing up in Jackson Heights, a neighborhood in Queens, New York City.

Off-duty homicide detective fatally shoots man in Northeast Philly, police say

An off-duty detective fatally shot a 54-year-old man after they each stopped their cars at an intersection in Northeast Philadelphia late Thursday night, police said. Investigators said the detective shot the man as he approached his car at Willits Road and Holme Avenue in Academy Gardens. The detective's name has not been released.

Three Mile Island owner seeks $1.6 billion federal loan to restart nuclear plant for Microsoft AI facility

The plan to restart a reactor at Pennsylvania's Three Mile Island nuclear plant could be supported by a $1.6 billion federal loan guarantee for the project. Owner Constellation Energy signed a 20-year power purchasing agreement with Microsoft last month that would use the plant to power new data centers for the tech giant's development of artificial intelligence.
