A teen prisoner who escaped from custody Wednesday has turned himself into police, 6ABC reports.

Hasheem Singletary, who turned 17 on Thursday, was accompanied by his family and lawyer when he arrived at Southwest Detectives late Thursday night.

Singletary was being transported from Florida to Southwest Detectives at 55th and Pine streets by private contractors Wednesday when he escaped from the car and fled. It appears that the child locks were not on in the back seat.

“Although he’s a kid — 16 years old — he was smart enough to realize that this was the right thing to do and he did it," the suspect's lawyer, Bill Brennan, told CBSPhilly. "Frankly he should be commended at least for surrendering.”

Singletary's brother, former Philadelphia Traffic Court Judge Willie Singletary, accompanied him Thursday night.

Hasheem Singletary was wanted in connection with a string of gunpoint robberies and home invasions.
