Police seek driver who killed 18-year-old man in hit-and-run

Driver was operating stolen vehicle

An 18-year-old student was killed Wednesday night in a hit-and-run crash in the Hunting Park section of Philadelphia.

Kevin Maldonado was attempting to enter a vehicle parked on the 3900 block of Old York Road when he was struck by a stolen car driven by an unknown female around 9:13 p.m., police said. Maldonado was thrown into the air and struck the rear bumper of another car.

The driver fled the scene, traveling southbound on Old York Road toward Pike Street, police said. She eventually left the car, a 2010 White Toyota Prius stolen from Lansdowne, Delaware County, near 1300 West Pike Street. The driver then fled on foot, heading westbound on Pike Street.

Maldonado, who suffered a broken leg and severe head trauma, was transported to Temple University Hospital. He was pronounced dead at 9:28 p.m.

Maldonado, a junior at Edison High School, was leaving work at Poppy and Son's auto body shop, according to The owner, Gregorio Esquilin, told the news station that he thought of Maldonado like a son.

"Beautiful kid," Esquilin said. "Beautiful guy. Quiet. Working. I don't forget this guy. I don't forget this guy."

Police are still looking for the driver, described as a short, black, heavy-set female who was wearing a wig and a white floral print dress.
