Retired Pa. Trooper kills two workers in attempted Turnpike robbery

Suspect killed in exchange of gunfire with state troopers

Pennsylvania State Police confirmed Sunday afternoon that a retired State Trooper fatally shot a Turnpike employee and a contract worker Sunday afternoon in a robbery attempt at the Fort Littleton Interchange in South Central Pennsylvania.

According to authorities, the incident occurred at the interchange in Fulton County around 7 a.m. when a suspect opened fire on the two victims during an attempted robbery, 6 ABC reports.

Both victims were fatally shot before law enforcement officials arrived at the scene within minutes and killed the suspect, identified as Clarence Briggs, in an exchange of gunfire, according to NBC 10

The victims were identified as toll collector Danny Crouse and security guard Ronald Heist. Police say Briggs shot the two men before unloading money into his car from a commandeered collection vehicle.

Pennsylvania Turnpike chairman Sean Logan said state officials were "deeply saddened by this horrific tragedy."

A state police forensic team was called to the scene to assist in the investigation.
