For many people in search of an ideal holiday destination, a beach town may not exactly crack the shortlist.

But America's first seaside resort isn't your ordinary coastal town in December, one website said.

Cape May, on the southern tip of the Jersey Shore, was named one of the 25 most festive holiday destinations in America on a list released last month by CarRentals.com.

"Cape May is a perfect place to spend the holidays if you want a little beach mixed in," the site states. "Stroll through the impressive Candy Cane Lane light displays at Congress Hall and take a Christmas Candlelight House Tour. The tours are self-guided walking tours through historic homes, inns, hotels, and churches all done up with proper holiday decorations."

The ranking, which included Hershey, recognized towns that "celebrate this magical time of year in their own unique ways," the site stated. The usual suspects like New York, Chicago and San Fransisco were on there, too, but the site also recognized a number of lesser-known destinations.

Along with an array of tours and trolley rides available in Cape May throughout the season, the 52nd annual Christmas Parade in neighboring West Cape May returns on Saturday night.
