Elderly woman shot, robbed in Northeast Philadelphia

Victim, 75, shot in face while returning from grocery shopping

Philadelphia police are investigating after a 75-year-old woman was shot in the face and robbed Thursday morning in Northeast Philadelphia.

According to authorities, the incident occurred just after 10 a.m. on Erdrick Street near Wellington Street in the Mayfair section of the city, NBC 10 reports. The victim, who has not been identified, had just finished grocery shopping at the ShopRite on Frankford Avenue when she was approached by an armed male suspect during her walk home.

The suspect approached the victim and shot her once in the cheek before stealing her purse, which contained $400 in cash and a cell phone. Police say the suspect then took off in a silver vehicle.

The victim somehow managed to make her way home about a block away under her own power. She unloaded her groceries and called police for help.

The woman, who has not been identified, was taken to Aria Torresdale hospital, where she was listed in stable condition and able to assist detectives in their preliminary investigation.

The gunman remains at large and police are asking anyone with information to contact Northeast Detectives at 215-686-3153.
