Flyers place Sean Couturier on injured reserve, recall Scott Laughton

On Tuesday night in Florida, it very much might have been the case of the Flyers winning the battle but losing the war. Sure, they picked up a 3-1 win with a rare perfect special teams performance (2-2 on the power play, 4-4 on the penalty kill) but Sean Couturier went down with one of those pesky lower-body injuries:

Today, the Flyers placed Couturier on injured reserve and recalled Scott Laughton from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Comcast SportsNet is reporting that Couturier’s injury is a left MCL sprain. The team’s second-line center flew back to Philadelphia today to be evaluated by the Flyers medical team, and Ron Hextall is expected to give an update sometime between now and tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Losing Couturier, probably the team’s best two-way center, is obviously a significant hit for the Flyers. Since coming back from injury to begin the season, Laughton has eight points in eight games for the red-hot Phantoms.
