Police have arrested four men who are accused of working together to rescue their impounded vehicle and the contents inside after it was seized as part of a drug investigation.
Gloucester Township Police said Tuesday that officials towed a suspicious vehicle parked in a fire lane to their headquarters last week. According to police, the vehicle allegedly reeked of marijuana. About eight hours after the vehicle was towed, officials watching the department's security cameras said they observed someone trying to break into the car. That person later fled.
Police said the suspects made one more attempt.
On Wednesday, Aug. 24, police said that in an effort to direct attention elsewhere, one of the suspects called 911 to report a fight with an armed subject.
Two men who allegedly fit the description of the previous incident made their way into the headquarters' parking lot, where they are accused of again trying to take back the impounded car. This time, police said they were able to circle around the station before they were stopped.
Officials said they determined that the suspects were mostly trying to get what was left behind in the car – a loaded handgun and a "quantity of raw marijuana," according to police.
Andrew Jennings was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, possession of a weapon and false public alarm, while Rhaman Smith Jr. was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Kevin Sager was charged with conspiracy to commit burglary, and Maurice Wallace was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and false public alarm.
