Obama shines spotlight on criminal justice system at NAACP convention

The NAACP's 106th annual national convention is underway in Philadelphia following a year in which racial issues dominated national headlines.

Repeated police-involved killings of unarmed black men sparked protests and, in some cases, riots, across the country against police brutality and racial profiling. Last month, nine members of Emanuel AME church in Charleston, South Carolina were gunned down by an alleged racist as they participated in a Bible study.

With racial injustice at the forefront of the national's social conscience, President Barack Obama is scheduled to speak Tuesday afternoon.

The convention also occurs one month after Rachel Dolezal resigned as the president of the Spokane NAACP after her family claimed she misrepresented herself as an African-American.
