Two New Jersey parents face charges for allegedly disposing of their infant son immediately after he was born late last week, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.
On May 19, Mercedes Sanchez-Torres, 30, of New Brunswick, was admitted to St. Peter's University Hospital days after giving birth to her son, who was nowhere to be found. Her partner, 34-year-old Jaciel Torres-Lopez, was arrested two days earlier and charged with hindering a police investigation in the newborn's death.
Police authorized an excavation of a sewer line nearby the couple's home on Remsen Avenue in New Brunswick, assigning up to 30 law enforcement officers to search the landfill, but the child still has not been recovered.
Both Sanchez-Torres and Torres-Lopez are charged with hindering an investigation into the death of their newborn and desecration of human remains. Bail for each of the defendants has been set at $100,000.
As the search and investigation continue, anyone with information is asked to call Detective Lemmerling of the New Brunswick Police Department at 732-745-5200 or Detective Abromaitis of the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office at 732-745-3300.
