Police chief: No charges 'at this time' in beating death of Delaware high school girl

No charges have been filed against three students under investigation for the beating death of a 16-year-old classmate in a school bathroom, Wilmington police said Friday afternoon.

"We are not in a position at this time to file charges," Wilmington Police Chief Bobby Cummings announced at a news conference. He said the department is focusing on the investigation as well as the family of the victim, Amy Inita Joyner-Francis.

Previously, Cummings said publicly that there will be charges following a thorough investigation.

Amy Inita Joyner-Francis was beaten April 21 in a school bathroom at Howard High School of Technology in Wilmington, police said. She died of her injuries.


He confirmed Friday that no weapons were used in the attack.

Three female students, who have neither been identified nor charged by authorities, were temporarily suspended earlier this week by school officials.

Cummings did not give a timeframe for completion of the investigation, nor did he take questions from the press at Friday's news conference.
