There is a profile shot on Ryan Bates’ twitter page of a somewhat pudgy kid sitting on a couch with shades on and “Go Birds” embossed in black ink across his bare chest. Bates is quite a bit leaner and a little larger today. It’s an indication right there in that rather grainy pic that he knows the way. The 2015 Archbishop Wood and 2018 Penn State graduate won’t need a GPS to find the Eagles’ NovaCare Complex this week for NFL rookie minicamp. It’s a familiar trek for the former all-Catholic League standout from Warrington, Bucks County.

They’re all going to be somewhere trying to preoccupy themselves while they wait, some on a golf course, some by working out, others huddled with family and friends in a living room, while still others chase their nieces or nephews around the house. The precautionary warnings have already been issued not to call at certain times on Friday or Saturday.

When Wes Hills found himself trapped in a steel prison, the first thought was to get out. One shoulder thrust was followed by another through the jammed driver’s side door. Once free, he didn’t even look down at what was once his supped-up 2001 black Hyundai Sonata, now a steaming, twisted pile of metal sitting somewhere in the Slippery Rock, Pa. woods after the car hydroplaned and spun off the road.

To the outsider’s eye, even those keenly aware of the
inner-workings of the NFL, the third-string quarterback on an NFL team can be
the invisible man, someone who seeps into the woodwork, prone to get lost and
only arise when summoned by the coaches or yanked into a mundane chore no one
else wants to do.

The late-March chill permeated every section of Citizens Bank Park Sunday night, as a strong breeze blew over a small sea of open blue seats. From an outsider’s perspective, it was a little hard to comprehend.

They all know him. He makes sure to shake every outstretched hand, and there are many, from the ushers, to the standing security that police courtside, to the players, to the coaches, to media asking to speak with him. Tom McGinnis, the man behind the booming voice that makes every car radio grill come alive each time the Philadelphia 76ers play, seamlessly wends his way through the Wells Fargo Center with a silver thermos of piping hot coffee in his right hand and a stack of stat sheets clutched in his left.

Two days later and the pain remains. In the passing days and weeks, it won’t get any easier for Phil Martelli. One of the most arduous chores for the longtime, beloved legendary basketball coach of the St. Joseph’s Hawks still remains: Cleaning out his office for the next coach of the Hawks, after Martelli was told the surprisingly news that he was fired on Tuesday after 24 years on Hawk Hill.
