Scott's oriole makes rare appearance in Pennsylvania

A rare Scott's oriole has been spotted in Lancaster, Pennsylvania — attracting birders from across the region. The yellow-bodied bird with white striped wings is usually found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. The sighting in Pennsylvania is only the state's second on record and the first in Lancaster County.

Penn Museum will repatriate human skulls once used to support white supremacist theories

The Penn Museum will repatriate or rebury a collection of 1,300 human skulls that were once used to advance white supremacist race science, led by 19th century natural scientist Samuel G. Morton. The collection had been housed at the Philadelphia museum since 1966, when Penn took it from the Drexel Academy of Natural Sciences. Some of the remains came from enslaved individuals, researchers found.

Philly mob associate sentenced in real estate fraud scheme

Stephen Sharkey, 51, of Swedesboro, was sentenced to a prison term and ordered to pay restitution after pleading guilty to defrauding victims in mortgage-closing schemes. Sharkey stole down payments and proceeds from the sale of a home, paying a portion of the stolen funds to an organization linked to the Philadelphia mob.

Engineer gets prison time in historic $1 billion cocaine bust at Philly port

An engineer on the MSC Gayane, a ship involved in one of the largest drug busts in United States history, will spend five years and 10 months in prison. The shipping vessel was raided at the Port of Philadelphia on June 17, 2019, when authorities seized nearly 20 tons of cocaine worth an estimated $1 billion in street value. Seven other crew members have pleaded guilty since the bust.
