The U.K. variant of COVID-19 has been found in a Southeastern Pennsylvania woman who splits her residence between Philadelphia and Bucks County. Research into the B.1.1.7 variant remains ongoing, but scientists believe it is more contagious than the dominant form of SARS-CoV-2.

A construction worker suffered a medical emergency on the 41st floor of a skyscraper under construction at Broad and Spruce streets, prompting a technical rescue from the Philadelphia Fire Department on Jan. 15, 2021. The worker, a 60-year-old man, was listed in stable condition.

Bernhard "Tanner" Kahlau, 22, of Mountain Top, Pennsylvania, died in skiing crash at Whiteface Mountain Ski Center in the Adirondacks on Jan. 12, 2021. Kahlau was a student at SUNY Fredonia, where he majored in business management and was a member of the Blue Devils hockey team.

Harrisburg University professor Dr. Charles Shearrow died of complications from the coronavirus at the age of 61. The lead professor of the school's Advanced Manufacturing program worked with his students to develop and distribute medical face shields to health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
