Jersey Shore fire chief suffers heart attack at scene of blaze

Fire engulfs Ocean County home

The head of a Jersey Shore fire department remains hospitalized after suffering a heart attack at the scene of a house fire Saturday.

Police in Ocean County said in a press release Sunday that Mantoloking Fire Chief Larry Gilman, who responded to the blaze at 219 Channel Lane, is being held in the intensive care unit after he and another firefighter were taken to the hospital.

Authorities did not disclose the details concerning Gilman's hospitalization, but several media outlets have reported that he suffered a heart attack.

The other firefighter was treated and released.

Fortunately, no one was in the home, which was engulfed in flames and black smoke Saturday evening, according to police.

The fire reportedly destroyed the house and authorities ask that residents avoid the scene as they conduct an investigation.
