Officials: Man killed after car crashes into Schuylkill River

26-year-old victim struck barrier along Kelly Drive

Officials announced that a man was killed Saturday morning after his car crashed into the Schuylkill River along Kelly Drive in Fairmount Park.

According to authorities, the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. Sunday when the driver, believed to have been speeding, crashed in an attempt to beat a red light on Ferry Road, CBS 3 reports. The victim struck the barrier along the side of the road, sending his vehicle overboard and into the water.

Police Captain Robert Richie said witnesses described a vehicle losing control after coming down the off-ramp on Route 1. Investigators believe the car struck a utility pole before flipping in mid-air and falling into the river.

Several concerned drivers and a few dozen first responders assisted in removing the unidentified 26-year-old victim from the vehicle, which landed in about six feet of water. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

It was not immediately clear whether drugs or alcohol played any role in the incident.
