Alec Bohm has not played since Aug. 29, and he will miss at least seven more days.

The Phillies have placed starting third baseman Alec Bohm on the 10-day injured list with a left hand strain, retroactive to Sept. 3, the team announced Friday afternoon. The team recalled Buddy Kennedy from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to fill his spot.

Bohm, who hurt his hand in the first inning of a game on Aug. 29 and was removed from the contest soon after, has not played since. The Phillies said they believed he would miss a handful of days, but not enough to justify a stint on the IL. But his return to action was continually delayed, and now the team has decided to remove him from its active roster for the time being.

While Bohm was injured eight days ago, teams can only place players on the injured list with three days worth of backdating. That means Bohm will be eligible to return on Sept. 13. If Bohm is indeed activated on that day, his absence will end up having lasted 15 days.

Stashing Bohm on the roster for a few extra days during which he could not play is not particularly problematic in September, when rosters are expanded, as the Phillies were able to maintain a normal four-player bench. Clearly, though, his recovery was continuing to buffer, and the team decided having an extra man available was worth ruling out Bohm for the next week.

Bohm has enjoyed a glorious breakout season in 2024, being named a starter in his first All-Star appearance. Bohm is slashing .290/.343/.462 this season, driving in 89 runs and collecting a major-league-leading 44 doubles.

Kennedy, a Millville, NJ native acquired by the Phillies in a trade with the Detroit Tigers in June, has starred for the IronPigs since the deal. In 63 games with the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate, the 25-year-old has posted an impressive .295/.397/.513 line.

The vast majority of Kennedy's appearances in 2024 have come at third base, but he may not see much opportunity with Edmundo Sosa and Kody Clemens both on the roster. Those two platooning at the hot corner until Bohm returns seems like the most realistic path forward.

In Bohm's absence, the Phillies will need Nick Castellanos to continue swinging a hot bat. Castellanos has been the obvious choice to replace Bohm in the clean-up spot in Phillies manager Rob Thomson's batting order, and that will likely remain the case for at least another week.
