Police investigate fatal shooting at popular Atlantic City shopping center

Incident happened at The Walk shortly after noon Thursday; alleged gunman found with self-inflicted injuries after fleeing

Police say Lewis Maisonet, 55, of Somers Point, allegedly shot Christopher Romero, 26, of Absecon, inside the Zumiez Store at The Walk in Atlantic City. Romero was pronounced dead later at Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center, and police say Maisonet is hospitalized with injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

UPDATE Sept. 2: The alleged gunman and the victim injured in Thursday's shooting at The Walk in Atlantic City have been identified by investigators with the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

The alleged shooter, who fled the scene and later sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound, is Lewis Maisonet, 55, of Somers Point, Atlantic County, police said. He currently is hospitalized in critical condition.

Authorities say Maisonet allegedly shot Christopher Romero, 26, of Absecon, Atlantic County, inside the Zumiez Store at The Walk. Romero was pronounced dead at Atlantic Care Regional Medical Center.The shooting is being called a domestic-related incident.

Police are investigating domestic-related shootings that happened at The Walk in Atlantic City shortly after noon on Thursday.

The alleged murder-suicide attempt left one man dead at the shopping plaza while another suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound but has survived, according to the Press of Atlantic City.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office did not reveal any other details in an updated news release sent out after 1 p.m., but stressed that the incident was not an active shooter situation and therefore not an ongoing threat. The Tanger Outlets were on lockdown for about an hour while police investigated.

"This is not related to any other issue, gangs or terrorism," Mayor Don Guardian said at a press conference following the incident and reported by the newspaper. "This was an unfortunate domestic violence ... two individuals were involved ... I think since this is an active investigation it would be inappropriate for me to release any additional information.

Their identities of those involved in this incident were not revealed by police.
