When it comes to sports returning, it's time for a reality check.

The way things are going we might be out and about by July. But even being allowed to leave your house won’t transfer over to 20,000 people attending a basketball game.

We have never needed football more than right now, stuck at home, wondering about our immediate and collective future. It’s far from just a “needed distraction” or a way for your local radio host to fill a four-hour talk show. The NFL is so tightly woven into the fabric of our lives that it might be the only normal thing left.

Every year around this time – even during a pandemic – we get all giddy about the possibilities of Howie Roseman signing a big-name Free Agent. It’s what you do this time of year in the NFL. Even the Browns are getting in on it!

Don’t laugh, but with the growing inevitability of professional sports being played in empty stadiums, it’s only a matter of time before someone asks this on a radio show:
Does staying home and not going to the game tonight due to fear of the coronavirus make you less of a fan?

I think there’s a fine line between jumping on a bandwagon and treating the Flyers like we do the Eagles and Sixers. Consider me on the Flyers wagon and your ally in sports media when I say this: “you don’t want the Flyers covered like we do the Eagles and Sixers” not in the slightest.

You are still an idiot if you booed Gabe Kapler before his first home game.

Can it be that it was all so simple? Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, Brett Brown, and a mixture of draft picks and veterans all on the same page with the same vision. Before we go any further, we have to be 100 percent honest with ourselves. Over the last six years, no star – or mid – athlete in this city has gotten a bigger pass/more patience from the fans than Embiid. That is not a bad thing. But it does help to explain the process of pure love for this man breaking down in front of our eyes.

This might be the most straightforward column I’ll write here. The Sixers don’t have the assets to trade their way out of a suspect season. That’s the biggest hindrance working against the team.
