Actress Da'Vine Joy Brown is an early frontrunner to win the 2024 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 'The Holdover.' The Mounty Airy native stars in the movie opposite of Paul Giamatti and plays a kitchen staff at a boarding school. "The Holdover' was screened recently at the Philadelphia Film Festival. It opens in select theaters on Oct. 27 before a wider release on Nov. 10.

Eagles players' next Christmas album will benefit CHOP, Children's Crisis Treatment Center

The 2023 Christmas album by Eagles linemen Jason Kelce, Jordan Mailata and Lane Johnson will benefit the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and the Children's Crisis Treatment Center. The album is titled 'A Philly Special Christmas Special.' Preorders go on sale Friday, Nov. 3. Last year's record raised $1.25 million for local charities.

Muslim group calls for hate crime investigation into vandalism at Point Breeze mosque

The Council on American-Islamic Relations is calling for a hate crime investigation into the vandalism at the United Muslim Islamic Center in Philadelphia. Leaders at the Point Breeze mosque say its windows and doors were tagged with hateful graffiti on Wednesday, including messages that said 'Muslim men are stupid and dumb.' Police are investigating.

The Philadelphia Phoenix, the city's professional ultimate frisbee team in the American Ultimate Disc League, has temporarily changed its name to the Gators in support of the Phillies' playoff series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. The new name, the Gators, is a nod to the emotional support alligator who was denied entry into a Phillies game in September.

The newest exhibit at the Philadelphia Museum of Art features embroidered pieces smuggled into and out of North Korea. 'The Shape of Time: Korean Art After 1989' focuses on South Korea's impact on contemporary pop culture while looking back on the country's complicated past. It opens Saturday, Oct. 21 with work from 28 artists.
