Love & Honey Fried Chicken to open first franchise location in University City

Love & Honey Fried Chicken will open its first franchise location in University City in early 2024, owners Todd and Laura Lyons announced Tuesday. Nafee Hossain will run the dine-in restaurant; the original Northern Liberties location is takeout only. The company seeks to expand elsewhere in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware in future years.

'Last look' tours of Painted Bride's mosaic mural offered ahead of demolition in the fall

The Philadelphia Magic Gardens is offering tours of Isaiah Zagar's mosaic mural at the former Painted Bride Arts Center, at 230 Vine St. before the building is demolished. Atrium Design Group acquired the property last year and is planning to build apartments.

In the '70s, a con man from Ghana swindled Philadelphians out of millions in the 'biggest scam' the city has seen

'Anansi's Gold,' the new book by Yepoka Yeebo, follows the con artist John Ackah Blay-Miezah on the 'biggest scam' in Philadelphia history. He claimed to have access to a secret stash of millions smuggled out of Ghana by its first president, Kwame Nkrumah. At least 300 investors in the Philly area were swindled.

Pennsylvania ends state funding of anti-abortion group Real Alternatives

Pennsylvania will end its 30-year contract with Real Alternatives, an anti-abortion non-profit organization in Harrisburg, the Shapiro administration said. The group funds crisis pregnancy centers and approved counselors, including the Catholic Social Services of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

What should Philly's Harriet Tubman statue look like? Vote for 1 of 5 designs

Five design proposals for Philly's Harriet Tubman statue, to be installed outside City Hall in 2025, have been unveiled by the Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy. People can vote for their preferred designs through Sept. 1, 2023. The sculpture was commissioned after a temporary Tubman statue, installed in 2022, proved popular.

Diesel tank leaks 100 gallons of fuel at the Navy Yard

A leaking diesel fuel tank caused an oil spill at the Philadelphia Navy Yard on Thursday morning, discharging 100 gallons of fuel. Some of it ended up in the Delaware River. The U.S. Coast Guard and Philadelphia Fire Department responded to the accident. It remains under investigation.

Nearly 9 of 10 health care workers admit to picking their noses – and they're more likely to get COVID-19, study finds

In a study published Wednesday in PLOS One, researchers reported an association between nose picking and an increased risk of contracting COVID-19 among hospital health care workers. There was no similar association with nail biting.

The Netflix docuseries 'Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" is available to stream on Aug. 9, two days before the 50th anniversary of hip hop. The series includes interviews with rap legends Queen Latifah, Da Brat, Sha-Rock, Remy Ma, Latto and Saweetie. Philly rappers Tierra Whack and Bahamadia are also featured.

Philly Fringe Festival returns with original theater, performance art, circus workshops and pop-up cabaret

The 2023 Philadelphia Fringe Festival will return for its 27th iteration from Thursday, Sept. 7 through Sunday, Sept. 24. Nearly 300 productions will run in performance spaces across the city, including Circadium circus acts, a Bowie showcase from teen students at Paul Green Rock Academy and a free rodeo in various parks.
