SEPTA to close 10 trolley stations Friday for two weeks of cleaning and maintenance

SEPTA will suspend trolley service between 13th and 40th streets starting at 10 p.m. on Friday, July 7. It will resume on Monday, July 24 at 5 a.m. after cleaning and repairs, including the demolition and replacement of the eastbound 22nd Street track. SEPTA has conducted summer cleaning blitzes since 2014.

Maternal deaths in the U.S. have more than doubled since 1999, study finds

The U.S. maternal mortality rate more than doubled from 1999 to 2019, with increases observed across all racial groups, a study published by the Journal of the American Medical Association found. The highest rates were observed among Black mothers. Troubling trends also were observed among American Indian and Alaska Native mothers.

Lynnewood Hall, the home of Philly industrialist Peter A.B. Widener, was sold to the Lynnewood Hall Preservation Foundation and will undergo a three-phase restoration. The estate is considered the last surviving Gilded Age mansion in the Philadelphia area and was last owned by the First Korean Church of New York.

In the mid-1800s, a gang of Irish pirates terrorized the Schuylkill

A lack of police presence below South Street in the 1840s led to a rise in gangs in Philadelphia, including the Schuylkill Rangers. The 'land pirates' robbed and assaulted boat captains and stevedores, as well as pedestrians. The primarily Irish group was led by Jimmy Haggerty, Jimmy Logue and William Keating.
