With a winter storm approaching the Philadelphia region this weekend, food shortages and empty shelves at grocery stores are likely to get worse. Shoppers are advised to be flexible, patient and not overbuy products when making trips to the supermarket to stock up. Winter weather is expected to compound food shortages caused by pandemic-related supply chain issues, labor constraints and COVID-19 infections due to the omicron variant.

'Superload' tractor-trailer carrying empty fuel tank crosses Pennsylvania, delaying traffic on 9-day trek

A 294-ton, 213-foot-long superload tractor-trailer is traveling across Pennsylvania with an empty fuel tank from a decommissioned nuclear training site in New York. The nine-day journey covers more than 400 miles and crosses through 16 counties to its final destination in Wampum, about 40 miles north of Pittsburgh. PennDOT officials say motorists should expect traffic delays along the route, much of which will be along Interstate 80.

Pennsylvania lawmaker wants Venmo, PayPal to become turnpike toll payment methods

Pennsylvania state Sen. Marty Flynn, D-Lackawanna, plans to introduce legislation that would enable motorists to use apps like Venmo, PayPal and Cash App to pay tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The turnpike has seen toll collection revenue plummet since transitioning to an all-electronic system that uses only E-ZPass and a toll-by-plate invoice system that results in delays and unpaid tolls.

The family of George E. Norcross III has purchased Formica Bakery, a 100-year-old Atlantic City business that has supplied bread to some of New Jersey's most iconic delis and hoagie shops, like White House Subs. The Norcross family plans to embark on a multimillion dollar expansion of the company, broadening distribution nationwide under the new name Formica Freitag Bakery.

Man charged in fatal shooting of ex-girlfriend in Norristown

Elvyn Rodriguez, 32, of Norristown, has been charged with murder and related offenses in the Jan. 10 shooting of his ex-girlfriend, 28-year-old Keishla Arroyo Rodriguez, at her apartment on West Main Street, according to Montgomery County prosecutors.

Max McGee, a Temple University graduate and Cherry Hill native, has been hired by ESPN to be an anchor on the network's flagship "SportsCenter" program. McGee joins ESPN after two years covering sports for Baltimore's WJZ-TV. He'll start on "SportsCenter" on Jan. 31.

Speed camera program to begin on I-95 in Wilmington

Delaware's Electronic Speed Safety Program on I-95 in Wilmington will be phased in beginning Monday, Jan. 17 in the work zone covering the "Restore the Corridor" project, the department of transportation said. The program, which will Violation warnings and notices with fines will be mailed to motorists after the first 30 days of the program. Crashes have increased significantly along this stretch of I-95 in Wilmington in the last two years.
