Father, girlfriend allegedly tortured 12-year-old Chester County girl for months before she died

A 12-year-old Chester County girl died on May 4 after she allegedly was tortured and starved for months by her father and his girlfriend at their home in West Caln Township, prosecutors said. Rendell Hoagland, 52, and Cindy Warren, 45, allegedly filmed dozens of videos of the abuse, including shackling the girl to furniture and making her do strenuous exercise.

A Bucks County pharma CEO who falsely accused 5 scientists of stealing trade secrets has to pay them $26.6 million

Sigmapharm Laboratories, based in Bensalem, Bucks County, has been ordered to pay five scientists who formerly worked there $26.6 million to resolve their countersuit against the company. The scientists were fired in 2014 and then falsely accused of stealing trade secrets.

In 2006, a Philly man was abducted and killed by police impersonators. Five people now face charges in the cold case

Five people have been charged in the death of Shamari Taylor, who was kidnapped and killed in 2006 by a group of suspects allegedly posing as police officers. Taylor's remains were found in 2018 at a vacant lot in North Philly, reinvigorating the cold case. Prosecutors say Taylor, the son of a former state Rep. Jon Myers, was kidnapped in a plot to steal cocaine and money.

Two Wissahickon Creek bridges to be repaired with federal climate grants

A pair of stone bridges that cross the Wissahickon Creek in Northwest Philadelphia — on Bells Mill Road and Valley Green Road — will get federal grant funds for repairs to help them withstand increased flooding that's expected to result from climate change in the years to come.

Police recover body of kayaker who went missing in Schuylkill River

Upper Merion police have found the body a 70-year-old man who went missing Monday after he had gone fishing in the Schuylkill River. The man was identified by friends a Tony Luongo. Search crews located his kayak and personal items Tuesday in the area of the township boathouse.

Tun Tavern, birthplace of the Marines, to be reconstructed in Old City

Philadelphia's Tun Tavern will be rebuilt as a restaurant and historical exhibit in Old City to honor its history as the place where the U.S. Marine Corps, a masonic lodge and several other organizations were founded during the colonial era. A parking lot at 19 S. Second St. has been acquired by the project's leaders, who are now fundraising with a goal to begin construction in November.

The owners of the Philadelphia 76ers have purchased 2,000 tickets to Game 6 of the series against the Knicks on Thursday night to keep Knicks fans from taking over the stands at the Wells Fargo Center. The tickets will be distributed to first responders, health care professionals, community groups and other local organizations.
