Philly's Licenses & Inspections is behind on thousands of necessary demolitions, repairs of unsafe buildings, audit says

Roughly 4,000 unsafe properties in Philadelphia are not being effectively monitored and dealt with by the city's Department of Licenses & Inspections, according to a report from CIty Controller Christy Brady. An audit of the department's list of imminently dangerous buildings — about 120 of them found — found that L&I is too understaffed to keep up with inspections, demolitions and required repairs to damaged structures that are susceptible to collapse.

Rare beaked whale found dead on Jersey Shore beach

A rare beaked whale was found dead Thursday morning on a beach in Spring Lake, New Jersey, in Monmouth County, according to the Marine Mammal Stranding Center. The animal was taken to a wildlife lab in Trenton to undergo a necropsy that will determine the cause of death.

A second season of 'Mare of Easttown' is in 'early discussions,' HBO exec says

HBO's crime drama 'Mare of Easttown' could return for Season 2, according to a network executive. Discussion are underway with star Kate Winslet and creator Brad Ingelsby. The 2021 limited series drew rave reviews for its depictions of a gritty community in Delaware County and a murder investigation that turned the town upside down.

Delaware County drops plan for mental health facility at former Don Guanella school

Delaware County will no longer pursue a plan to open a mental health treatment facility on a portion of the future Delco Woods park in Marple Township. The 213-acre site, formerly the Don Guanella school, was acquired by eminent domain to be turned into an open space. Plans to use a portion of it for mental health services drew heavy opposition.

South Jersey man arrested for stowing baby deer in shopping bag, police say

A Mays Landing man was arrested for hiding a baby deer inside a shopping bag outside a ShopRite in Stafford Township, police said. Officers allegedly found the animal when it poked its head out of the man's grocery bag. Matthew Keithley, 23, was also charged with possession of crack cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

A 190-year-old mansion in Montgomery County can only be spared from demolition if it's moved off a sprawling property in Limerick near the Philadelphia Premium Outlets. The Eastern Pennsylvania Preservation Society is promoting the abandoned home as free to anyone who can move it to a new location.

Philadelphia police will embark on a new strategy to target crime in Kensington, where the city has emphasized addressing quality of life concerns since Mayor Cherelle Parker took office in January. The department plans to deploy 75 officers to work on the ground in the neighborhood, Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.
