The 25th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards aired Sunday night honoring the best in film and television acting. A couple of wins were to be expected and even repeats from other award shows, but there were a number surprises, too.
"The Favourite," "BlacKkKlansman" and "A Star is Born" were shut out from the awards, despite leading in the nominations. Rami Malek again took home the best actor prize for “Bohemian Rhapsody” as did Glenn Close for her performance in “The Wife.” Mahershala Ali has proven his performance worthy of recognition with three wins already under his belt for best supporting actor for “Green Book.”
Emily Blunt surprised fans and even herself for winning best supporting actress for “A Quiet Place." Her husband, John Krasinski, who co-starred and directed the film, started tearing up as Blunt shared her award with him and delivered a glowing remark of thanks.
But the biggest surprise of the evening was “Black Panther” winning outstanding performance by an ensemble. (The film also took home outstanding action performance by a stunt ensemble.) It’s the first time a superhero movie has won the top SAG award. After the cast went up to accept the award, Chadwick Boseman gave a motivated and powerful speech.

“We all know what it’s like to be told that there is not a place for you to be featured, yet you are young, gifted and black," he said. "We knew, not that we would be around during award season or that it would make a billion dollars, but we knew that we had something special that we wanted to give the world. That we could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing. That we could create a world that exemplified a world that we wanted to see."
In discussing people's questions about "Black Panther" making it through awards season, he told his peers: "It’s a pleasure to be celebrated by you, to be loved by you, and one thing I do know, with [the question] 'Did it change the industry?', I know that you can’t have a 'Black Panther' now without a '2' on it.”
In television, Patricia Arquette took home best actress in a movie or miniseries for “Escape at Dannemora.” In her speech the actress got a bit political and gave a special shoutout to Special Counsel Robert Mueller, thanking him for making sure "we have sovereignty for the United States of America." Sandra Oh also took home her third award for her performance in “Killing Eve” as did Rachel Brosnahan for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.”
“This Is Us” won best performance by an ensemble in a drama series for its second year in a row, and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" took home the best performance award for a comedy series.
