GoFundMe campaign aims to protect Betty White from 2016

The fundraiser is meant to be comedic but has a charitable component

As the year rolls to a close, many people are denouncing it as one with many celebrity deaths, from the most recent losses of Carrie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds to David Bowie, Prince and Muhammad Ali.

To bring a touch of comedy to the great sadness felt by many over the losses of these Hollywood icons, a random guy from a South Carolina city is offering to personally safeguard 94-year-old Betty White for the remainder of the year – for a small fee.

Demetrios Hrysikos, creator of the "Help Protect Betty White from 2016" GoFundMe campaign, wrote in the campaign description that he would "fly to where ever Betty White is and keep her safe till Jan 1, 2017."

The crowdfunding campaign is seeking $10,000 in donations; more than $7,000 has already been raised as of noon Thursday. Hrysikos said he plans to end the campaign on New Year's Day.

But before you dismiss this as a money-making scam for personal profit, Hrysikos, while clever, has a purer intent.

In the campaign description, he said all money raised will be donated to the Spartanburg Little Theater group in Spantanburg, South Carolina, with a goal "to help craft new stars of stage and screen to carry [the] mantle of the legends that have left [us] this year."
